Concert Choir

The 75 voice Concert Choir serves the broader interests of our undergraduate population, particularly those anticipating a career in choral music education, through a wide ranging repertoire that is both accessible and challenging. The ensemble regularly partners with the area’s finest high school choirs and also joins the A Cappella Choir and Chamber Choir each year to perform major works with orchestra as the Grand Chorus.

NOVA

Nova is the new music ensemble of the University of North Texas, directed by Dr. Elizabeth McNutt. Repertoire includes classics of the modern era alongside music by younger and less familiar composers, giving students the opportunity to perform fresh and exciting contemporary works. Nova’s mission is to provide students and audiences with an engaging diversity of musical, aesthetic, and cultural experiences. Encounters with faculty and guest composers give students insight into the process of creating new music. Recent performances have included music of Elliott Carter, David Lang, Frederic Rzewski, Steven Stucky, Giacinto Scelsi, Nick Didkovsky, Libby Larsen, Judith Shatin, James Tenney, Isang Yun, Christian Wolff, John Cage, Stefan Wolpe, and Charles Ives, as well as UNT faculty and student composers. Nova has recently collaborated with guest composers Augusta Read Thomas and Mario Davidovsky. The ensemble’s instrumentation varies each semester. Projects each term include both large ensemble and chamber works. Faculty and guest performers occasionally join the ensembles, enhancing students’ understanding of contemporary performance issues.

Early Music

The ensembles within the Early Music Studies Area offer one of the largest and most active performance activities of its type in North America. With a collection of over 260 instruments, nearly any ensemble performing 16th-, 17th- and 18th century repertoire can be assembled. Ensembles perform regularly throughout Texas and the United States and at the Boston & Berkeley Early Music Festivals.
